Takeout Roulette

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

So before heading over to my friend Mark’s last Friday, I noticed on his rather neglected bloggish thing that he had run into some awkwardness re. losing a takeout menu and bluffing his way through a “student special” order.

Which actually seemed like a lot of fun, so I gave it a whirl. These are the rules for the budding game of Takeout Roulette, Lennoxville Edition:

1. Pick a decent takeout restaurant…one where you’re pretty sure you won’t be disappointed regardless of what the order winds up being.

2. Roll some dice. In the case of the Village Grec, the Student Special menu is a 12-item smorgasbord of deliciousness. I rolled a “4.”

3. Place the order. If you don’t know the address where you’re at due to being at a friend’s place or being ridiculously drunk, have him place the order. POINT OF ORDER: Having a friend place the order can also allow you to leave the room to preserve the mystery, avoiding questions like “what do you want on that burger?” or “extra squid in that shake?” Just make sure your friend does not have a cruel sense of humour and knows what you are allergic to.

4. Wait for deliciousness… deliciousness heightened by nervous anticipation. Soup? Salad? A triple cheeseburger with curly fries? An all-dressed sub? WHO KNOWS?

5. Receive, pay, and enjoy! In my first Takeout Roulette experience, I wound up with a pizza/poutine combo … one of my favourites!

6. Repeat! I am determined not to repeat Takeout Roulette numbers, which means I will work my way through the Grec menu in, well, about a year. Given how often I order from them.

So that’s Takeout Roulette. A little way to add some adventure to drinkin’ night. Thank you to Mark for the inspiration, and to the Village Grec for good eatin’ that goes well with booze.
